Giant crocodile captured in the Philippines, another still may be on the loose
September 6, 2011
A crocodile weighing more than one ton was recently caught in the Philippines, but another giant croc may still be on the loose. The captured beast is suspected of killing two people, a 12-year-old girl in 2009 and a farmer this past July, as well as a number of livestock, according to The Guardian. It took 100 people and a crane to move the subdued creature from the creek to a flatbed truck and the 20-foot croc beats the creature that currently holds the Guinness World Record for the largest crocodile at just under 18 feet.
The Associated Press reports that the croc that was captured in the village of Bunawan may not, in fact, be the culprit responsible for the deaths of the two Filipino people. Another, potentially larger croc has been seen in the marshlands surrounding the village.
"There is a bigger one, and it could be the one creating the problems," wildlife official Ronnie Sumiller, who led the capture of the first croc, told the AP. "The villagers were saying 10 percent of their fear was gone because of the first capture, but there is still the other 90 percent to take care of."
People can use international phone cards to make calls to the Philippines to talk to their friends and families about the crocodile hunt.
