Hilary Clinton to visit the Philippines in a few days
November 10, 2011
Secretary of State Hilary Rodham Clinton recently embarked on a South Pacific tour that will take her to Hawaii, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia in order to strengthen international relations. Her first stop is in Honolulu where she will attend a number of international forums, including the North American Leads Summit where she will be joined by President Barack Obama.
Her next stop will be in Manila to honor the 60th anniversary of the U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty. The treaty was signed in Washington, D.C., on Augst 30, 1951 as a promise that each nation would provide assistance to the other should they be attacked by an external enemy. Secretary Clinton's visit will reaffirm that this agreement is still held in good standing by both countries.
"In addition to meetings with Philippine officials on November 16, Secretary Clinton will also participate in a signing ceremony to launch the implementation phase of the Partnership for Growth with the Philippines," said Victoria Nuland, a department spokesperson.
People who are working outside the country can make calls to the Philippines to talk to their loved ones about the American dignitary's visit, and find out if they were able to catch a glimpse of the Secretary Clinton.
