Students travel to Brazil for summer program

November 21, 2011

Studying abroad can provide students with the chance to learn a new language and gain a better understanding of another culture, which is exactly what happened for 15 seniors from the Bell Multicultural high school in Washington, D.C. The Washington Post reports that Global Gateways, a five-week summer program, took the students to Rio de Janeiro and Salvador to give them a broader, more global perspective of the world.

The kids spent three weeks brushing up on global affairs at Howard University before heading to Brazil for a firsthand experience.

"It was the standard of living that stuck out to me," Amber Walton, one of students on the trip, told the news source. "The standard of living there was so much lower than what it is here. I think for some of us, we have pretty low standards if we live in the city, but it's even moreso there."

While traveling abroad can be a rewarding and enriching experience, it can also be tough for some people to be so far from their loved ones. Hearing the voice of a parent or a friend can do wonders to quell feelings of homesickness, and an international phone card can allow travelers to call home without paying expensive long distance charges.
